The retro Nissan Micra is a car that was first introduced in Japan in Oct 1982. It would eventually replace the Nissan Cherry in the supermini segment. Does it matter what college I go to?

It's not true. There is no difference in the programs offered by colleges for getting into automotive work. However, some schools offer better programs than others so if you're looking for something more specialized, look elsewhere.

What is the best way to learn about car mechanics

To work as an auto technician, you don’t need to know much about cars. The only thing you need is the ability to fix them. Most people begin by changing brake pads and tires, before moving on to more complicated repairs.

You'll need to know how to read diagrams, understand written instructions and follow basic rules of good practice. You must also be able judge if parts need to replaced or repaired.

It's important to remember that you shouldn't attempt to repair vehicles without having received proper training and guidance. This is especially true when you are dealing with costly components like engines and transmissions.

In fact, even though you won't need to know much about cars, you will need to thoroughly know the basics of mechanical engineering and physics. This is how you understand the mechanisms behind engines and brakes.

It is also important to remember that you will need to be able to handle many situations. For example, you may find yourself working on a vehicle that has been involved in a serious accident. Experience with accidents and breakdowns is also a must.

Finally, you must be willing to learn new skills quickly. In order to be able diagnose and fix problems, you will also need to know how to do simple maintenance tasks such tightening bolts.

What jobs are available for car mechanics?

There are three main areas of employment for car mechanics:

  • Automotive repair shops
  • Dealerships
  • Independent garages

Automotive repair shops

Most people think of this as the first step to becoming a mechanic. It's also the easiest way you can get started. You can either work in a shop run by someone else, or start your business.

If you decide to work at a shop, you'll need to apply to join a union. Once you're accepted into the union, you'll receive training from the union.

After the training, you will be ready to go and start your job.

Registering with the government is required if you intend to open a garage. After you register, you will be required to meet specific standards.

When you've registered, you'll be given a license to operate your garage.

Your license will allow you to sell spare parts and do minor repairs. It will not allow you to repair major engine problems.

You will be expected to sell spare parts and also offer guidance and advice to customers.

Dealership jobs

Most dealerships employ mechanics who specialize in one area of the car. They might be able to only fix brakes or replace tires.

Some dealerships have the option to hire general mechanics who can take care of all aspects.

These positions often require applicants that they undergo special training before being allowed work. This allows employers to pick the right candidates for their jobs.

Some dealerships hire students straight out of college. These graduates already have a basic understanding of mechanical engineering, so they are able to learn all about cars.

Independent garages

Independent garages don't belong to any particular dealership. Instead, independent garages tend to concentrate on providing high-quality services.

Because independent garages aren't affiliated with any company, they can afford to pay higher wages. As a result, these jobs are generally better paid than those at dealerships.

Independent garages don't necessarily make for better work environments. Many business owners prefer to be in control of their businesses than to delegate it to employees.

You may find yourself working for long hours and not having control over the day.

Expect to earn lower salaries than if you were working in a dealership.

The good news is that you can easily switch between different kinds of jobs. To work at a dealership you will need to contact your employer to see if he is open to the idea of hiring you.

If you prefer to work in an independent garage, you might consider applying directly to its owner.

The bad news? Finding a new position isn't always easy. Many other factors can also influence the amount you earn.

It could be the type and cost of labor you use to repair your vehicle.

Statistics

  • According to the BLS, total auto technician employment is expected to exceed 705,000 by 2030. (uti.edu)

How To

How to become an Automotive Technician

Automotive technicians provide repair and maintenance services to vehicles. He/she is employed at automobile dealerships, garages, service centres, and auto shops. He/she helps customers fix their cars, trucks, motorcycles, ATVs, boats, lawn mowers, snowmobiles, tractors, trailers, farm equipment, planes, helicopters, jet skis, watercraft, bicycles, motorcycles, scooters, golf carts, etc. An automotive technician must be capable of diagnosing problems and making repairs safely, accurately and efficiently.

If you want to be an automotive technician, you need an associate degree from vocational school. After completing the program, he/she must pass ASE certification. ASE stands for American Society of Mechanical Engineers. There are two parts to the ASE certification exam. The first section tests your mechanical skills, while the second tests your practical knowledge. To take the test, you must visit one of the approved testing locations. You can find these locations online or through your local automobile dealer.

After passing the test, a candidate must pass a state examination before becoming licensed as an automotive technician. This process is different depending on where you live. Some states require candidates to complete a training program, while others let them study on their own. Some states issue licenses to technicians as soon as they get their license. Others wait until they have worked at least six months as an automotive technician.

To become an automotive technician, one must apply at a local dealership. Most new employees begin as apprentices once they are hired. Apprenticeships last for three years. Students learn basic repair skills such as changing oil and adjusting brakes, changing tires, cleaning spark plugs and inspecting engine compartments. Some students learn how to do advanced repairs, such as installing air filters, replacing shocks, repairing engines, and replacing transmission fluids. Schools offer classes during business hours. Some schools offer evening classes, however.

After completing an apprenticeship, a student becomes a journeyman. Journeymen typically spend four to five years learning how to install major systems, such as transmissions, differentials, steering gear, suspensions, and drive shafts. They are also taught how to troubleshoot electrical components and remanufacture engines. Employers prefer to hire journeymen as they are familiar with the job and can anticipate customer needs.

If a candidate successfully passes the required exams and receives a license, he/she might want to consider starting his/her own shop. The Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that there were nearly 1.7 million jobs available for automotive mechanics in 2010. The Bureau of Labor Statistics predicted that this number would rise by 18% from 2009 to 2020. The candidate should expect to invest thousands of money in equipment and supplies if he/she decides to start his/her shop.

Many factors affect the automotive technician's salary, including location, education, experience, and employer type. On average, an unemployed person could earn $20,000 annually. Someone with only a high school diploma could earn around $21,000 per year. A bachelor's degree is equivalent to approximately $24,000 annually. Technicians with bachelor's degrees earn approximately $27,000 per year. Masters' degree holders earn around $32,000 per annum. Salary increases are common, so a professional who earns less than $30,000 now could reasonably expect to earn $40,000 or more in just a few years.
