The huge displacement engines of the Detroit OEM's (previously known as The Big Three GM, Ford and Chrysler) were the catalyst for the rise in muscle car mania. Then, during the mid-1960s, a Japanese and German invasion was underway. Daimler and Volkswagen were among the top car manufacturers, as was Toyota and Nissan.
