Methods

A variety of methods can be used for testing a car's injectors. Standard Motor Products sponsors a video addressing the subject. We will cover some of the most commonly used ones. Listening to your injectors can be a great way to test them. Every injector creates a clicking sound as it opens and closes. A mechanic's scope, a long straight screwdriver, and a thin flexible hose can all be used to listen and verify that the injectors are functioning correctly.

Signs that there is a problem

The check engine light on your car indicates that there is something wrong with the fuel injectors. The check engine light is a warning system that will turn on the check engine light if the fuel supply to your car is not working properly. It will flash for several reasons and you should always look at the codes that will appear on your car's display. These are some ways to troubleshoot the problem.

Equipment required

There are many methods to test your fuel injectors. A simple diagnostic tool is a Noid light. This diagnostic tool plugs in to the wiring harness and shows the voltage of the electric signal. However, you must make sure that the Noid light is connected to the correct injector. These lights can be bought at an auto part store. Make sure you buy the correct set.

FAQ

What are the requirements of an automotive technician?

You must have completed high school or GED with good grades in maths and English. It is also necessary to be able both to read and to write. To be allowed to work, you must pass a written and practical test.

How long does an apprenticeship in automotive mechanics last?

It takes three years to complete an apprenticeship as an automotive mechanic. This includes two year at school as well as two years as an apprenticeship. The first year of training is spent in the trade. This includes theory and practical skills as well as safety procedures. You'll also learn how tools can be used safely and efficiently during this year. You'll spend the second year in on-the-job training, where you will gain experience in various trades. You'll have the opportunity to attend formal courses during these periods too.

The final year is dedicated to earning certifications and qualifications in the field. These include NVQs (National Vocational Qualifications), which are awarded after passing exams covering specific topics within the industry. Additionally, HNCs are Higher National Certificates that cover general subjects such management, customer service, and business administration. Finally, there are City & Guilds certificates that are offered for those who wish to become qualified in certain trades.

What kind of car mechanic jobs exists?

For car mechanics, there are three main areas for employment:

  • Automotive repair shops
  • Dealerships
  • Independent garages

Automotive repair shops

It's where most people start to think about becoming a mechanic. In fact, it's probably the easiest way to get started. You have two options: work in an existing shop or open your own.

If you plan to work in a shop, you must apply to join the union. Once you have been accepted into the Union, you'll be given training by the union.

After completing the training, you'll be ready to start work.

If you decide to open your own garage, you'll need to register with the government. After you register, you will be required to meet specific standards.

After you have registered, you will be issued a license to operate your garage.

Your license will permit you to sell spares parts and perform minor repairs. You can't fix major engine problems with your license.

In addition to selling spare parts, you'll also be expected to offer advice and guidance to customers.

Dealership jobs

Most dealerships employ mechanics that specialize in one aspect of the vehicle. They may be trained to replace or repair tires, or they may specialize in brakes.

Some dealers also have general mechanics that can handle all aspects.

These positions may require applicants to complete specific training before being allowed on the job. This allows employers to select the most qualified candidates for their roles.

Some dealerships will even hire graduates right out of university. These graduates are familiar with the fundamentals of mechanical engineering so they can easily learn about cars.

Independent garages

Independent garages don’t have to be associated with any particular dealer. They tend to be focused on high-quality service.

Independent garages have the ability to afford higher wages, as they aren’t associated with any one company. These jobs generally pay better than those at dealerships.

Independent garages can be just as good places to work, but this does not mean they are better. Many owners prefer to control their businesses themselves, rather than delegating it to employees.

It is possible to work long hours, but not have any control over the day.

It is also possible to expect lower wages than you would if working at a dealer.

It's possible to switch between jobs. If you want to work at a dealership, then you simply need to ask your current employer if he would consider hiring you as a mechanic instead.

Alternativly, you can apply directly to the garage owner if you are interested in working at an independent garage.

Unfortunately, finding a new job can be difficult. There are many other factors that can influence your earnings.

This could include the type of vehicle that you are working on and whether or not you charge an additional for labor.

What is the distinction between a mechanic or an automotive technician?

These two jobs are very similar but not identical. Both a mechanic and an automotive technician can repair cars.

A mechanic must possess good manual dexterity, and be able perform simple tasks efficiently. A mechanic must be able diagnose and fix problems quickly and accurately.

An automotive technician needs to be more technically skilled than a mechanic. They need to be able use tools such drills and wrenches, and read blueprints.

They must be able and competent to safely perform complicated procedures. They must be familiar with all types of electrical and engine systems.

They must also be able comprehend how the various parts interrelate with one another.

As a result, mechanics typically make less than technicians. However, both careers offer great opportunities.

Statistics

How To

How to become an automotive technician

An automotive technician performs repairs and maintains vehicles. He/she works in car dealerships as well as auto shops, garages, and service centers. He/she works with customers to repair their cars and trucks, ATVs or snowmobiles. An automotive technician must be capable of diagnosing problems and making repairs safely, accurately and efficiently.

A person who wants to work as an automotive technician should first obtain an associate degree from a vocational school. After completing this program, he/she will need to pass the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence's (ASE) certification exam. ASE stands as American Society of Mechanical Engineers. There are two sections to the ASE certification test. One section tests mechanical knowledge; the second section tests practical skills. To take the test, you must visit one of the approved testing locations. These locations are available online or through your local automotive dealer.

After passing the test, a candidate must pass an examination in order to be licensed as an automotive technician. This process can vary depending on where the applicant lives. Some states require candidates to complete a training program, while others let them study on their own. Some states require technicians to be licensed immediately upon receiving their license. Other states wait until they have been employed as automotive technicians for at least six month.

To get started as an automotive technician, a person should apply to a local automotive dealership. Most new employees begin as apprentices once they are hired. Apprenticeship programs typically last three to four years. Students learn basic repair skills such as changing oil and adjusting brakes, changing tires, cleaning spark plugs and inspecting engine compartments. Some students are taught how to repair engines and replace transmission fluids. Most schools offer classes during regular business hours. However, there are some schools that offer evening classes for those who need them.

Once a student completes his/her apprenticeship, he/she becomes a journeyman. Journeymen generally spend four- to five decades learning how to fix major systems like transmissions. They also learn to perform complex repairs, such as remanufacturing engines, rebuilding transmissions, and troubleshooting electrical components. Because they have the experience and knowledge to do the job right, employers love hiring journeymen.

If a candidate successfully passes the required exams and receives a license, he/she might want to consider starting his/her own shop. The Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that there were nearly 1.7 million jobs available for automotive mechanics in 2010. This figure is expected to rise 18 percent between 2009-2020. Candidates who decide to open their own business should be prepared to invest thousands in equipment and supplies.

The salary of an automotive technician will depend on many factors including where you live, your education level, experience and the type of employer. On average, a jobless person could expect to earn $20,000 annually. A high school diploma is all that's required to earn approximately $21,000 annually. A bachelor's degree is equivalent to approximately $24,000 annually. A technician with a bachelor's degree earned approximately $27,000 annually. A master's degree earns around $32,000 per a year. A common trend is for salary increases to occur so a professional making less than $30,000 can reasonably expect to be earning $40,000 or more within a few years.
